Hedgehog Care Guide & Required Supplies
Important Info
Hedgehogs are unique exotic pets that require specialized care, proper nutrition, and a suitable environment to thrive. When you adopt a hedgehog from Exotic Pet Home, you’ll receive lifetime breeder support, along with ongoing guidance and care advice. If you ever have questions about your hedgehog’s health, behavior, diet, or habitat, we’re always here to help.
Hedgehog Ownership Laws
Hedgehog ownership is regulated differently depending on where you live. They are currently prohibited as pets in California, Georgia, Hawaii, New York City, and Washington, D.C., and importation into Pennsylvania is restricted. Some states, counties, or municipalities may also require permits or have additional regulations.
Because animal ownership laws can change, it is the buyer’s responsibility to verify that hedgehogs are legal in their city, county, and state before placing a reservation or purchasing a pet. We recommend checking with your state’s wildlife or natural resources agency, as well as your local government, to confirm the most current regulations.
We’re happy to answer questions about the adoption process, but ensuring legal ownership in your area remains the responsibility of the buyer.
Basic Info
Species Name: African Pygmy Hedgehog, also known as the white-bellied hedgehog (Atelerix albiventris)
Lifespan: Average 3-5 years, but can live up to 8 years with a healthy life, proper care, and nutrition
Adult Size: 5-8 inches long and 0.5-1.25 pounds
Grooming Your Hedgehog
Regular nail trims are an important part of keeping your hedgehog healthy and comfortable. Use small pet nail clippers or standard nail trimmers to carefully trim only the tip of each nail. Take care to avoid the quick, the pink area inside the nail that contains blood vessels, as cutting it can cause pain and bleeding. If this happens accidentally, apply gentle pressure or use a pet-safe styptic powder to help stop the bleeding. Many owners find it easier to trim their hedgehog’s nails after a bath, when the nails are softer.
Bathing Your Hedgehog
Hedgehogs do not require frequent baths, but an occasional bath can help remove dirt, clean their feet, or provide a gentle grooming session. Fill a small sink or shallow container with a few inches of warm (not hot) water just enough to reach your hedgehog’s legs. Use a mild, fragrance-free, pet-safe shampoo if needed, and gently clean the quills, feet, and nails with a soft toothbrush or grooming brush.
Rinse thoroughly to remove all shampoo, then dry your hedgehog completely with a soft towel before returning them to their warm enclosure. Because hedgehogs can become chilled easily, never return a damp hedgehog to its habitat, and always ensure it is completely dry and kept at the proper enclosure temperature.
Hedgehog Housing Essentials
A proper enclosure is the foundation of a healthy, happy hedgehog. We recommend a spacious plastic bin enclosure or a solid-bottom cage with good ventilation and a minimum floor space of 30″ × 18″. Avoid wire flooring, and keep ramps or elevated platforms to a minimum unless they have protective barriers to prevent falls. As your hedgehog grows, providing a larger enclosure or supervised playtime outside the habitat is encouraged.
African Pygmy Hedgehogs require a consistent temperature of 75–80°F (24–27°C) throughout the year. A ceramic heat emitter paired with a thermostat is the safest way to maintain the proper temperature. Heating pads alone are not recommended because they do not warm the surrounding air and may not prevent dangerous temperature drops.
Because hedgehogs are naturally active at night, they should have access to a solid-surface exercise wheel at least 10.5 inches in diameter. Wire, mesh, or saucer-style wheels should be avoided, as they can cause injuries. A cozy hide, tunnel, or fleece sleeping pouch will also provide a safe place for your hedgehog to rest during the day.
For bedding, choose safe materials such as kiln-dried pine, aspen shavings, paper bedding, or fleece liners. Never use cedar or scented bedding products, as they can be harmful to your hedgehog’s respiratory system. Fresh water should always be available in either a water bottle or a sturdy bowl, and a heavy food dish helps prevent spills.
Feed your hedgehog a high-quality hedgehog diet or premium cat food formulated with appropriate protein and fat levels. Insects such as mealworms or dubia roaches can be offered as occasional treats and enrichment. A balanced diet, proper housing, and routine care will help your hedgehog live a healthy, active life.
