Ferret Care Guide

Basic Ferret Care Guide

Ferrets are intelligent, playful, and social pets that thrive with daily interaction and a safe, enriching environment. With proper care, nutrition, and regular veterinary checkups, ferrets can live happy, healthy lives for many years.

Housing

Your ferret should have a spacious, secure cage with solid flooring, soft bedding, and plenty of room to play, climb, and sleep. They also need several hours of supervised playtime outside their enclosure each day in a ferret-proofed area.

Diet

Ferrets are obligate carnivores and require a high-quality, meat-based diet that is rich in animal protein and fat. Fresh water should always be available, and food should be accessible throughout the day due to their fast metabolism.

Exercise & Enrichment

Ferrets are naturally curious and energetic. Provide tunnels, balls, chew toys, hammocks, and other safe enrichment items to keep them mentally and physically stimulated. Daily interaction with their family is essential for their well-being.

Grooming

Trim your ferret’s nails regularly and clean their ears as needed. Occasional baths are acceptable, but frequent bathing is not recommended, as it can dry out their skin and increase natural body oils. Wash bedding regularly to help keep your ferret and its environment clean.

Health Care

Schedule routine wellness exams with an exotic animal veterinarian and keep up with recommended vaccinations and parasite prevention. Monitor your ferret for changes in appetite, behavior, or energy level, and seek veterinary care if you notice any signs of illness.

Every ferret adopted from Exotic Pet Home comes with lifetime breeder support. Whether you have questions about feeding, housing, training, or general care, we’re always here to help you give your new companion the best possible life.
